We know 2017 is a year of Bezel-less phones, but there are some companies like Ulefone marking their roots to solid, rugged phones to survive in any condition yet powerful. This time Ulefone has come up with their latest armor grade phone, Armor 2 and we were excited to get out hands on one to find out how rugged the phone is. Armor 2 was showcased in the latest MWC 2017 held in Barcelona, Spain. Today, we will review Ulefone Armor 2 in this article to give you a brief idea of its features and specifications.
Ulefone is a Chinese Smartphone Manufacturing Company who has previously launched many innovative mid-range smartphones. Last year the company came up with its first ever rugged smartphone Ulefone Armor. We saw Armor stand out alone among other phones of its segment with appealing specs sheets and high durability but with some lapses (nothing is perfect you see). So to overcome those shortcomings the company came up with its successor, Ulefone Armor 2.
The Ulefone Armor 2 inherits flagship like specifications and easily surpasses its predecessor in almost every way. As rugged phone segment is known to list rock-solid phones, but the Armor 2 also comes up with some features, we hardly witness in a Rugged phone. Armor 2 was also awarded the “Best Rugged Phone” recently and applauded by many for its toughness and upgraded hardware components.
If you wish to own a Smartphone which is topped with modern specs and is resistant to water, dust and as well as to accidental falls. Well, then Armor 2 is the phone for you with all the modern features plus the ultimate ruggedness. Armor 2 is especially the phone for Sportsmen, Travellers, and Field Workers who accidentally tend to break their phone.

Ulefone Armor 2 Review
Let us begin with what is inside the box:
- Armor 2 Phone
- Wall Charger Adapter
- USB to USB Type-C Cable
- USB Type-C to USB Type-B OTG Dongle
- USB Type-C to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Cable
- Multiple Language User Manual
The Ulefone Armor 2 features a 5-inch Full-HD Display and runs on Android Nougat (v7.0) Operating System. The Device runs on 2.6 GHz MediaTek Helio P25 octa-core processor with 6 gigs of RAM and Mali-T880 GPU and also 64 GB of onboard storage. The device also carries a 16 MP primary and 8 MP front facing camera.
The Armor 2 acquires a metal and polycarbonate and rubber body. A beautiful design with IP68 certified protection grade (beauty with the protection). The phone looks amazingly rock solid and firm at first glance and has firm edges. The edges are not sharp and perfectly blends with the screen of the device to keep it safe and intact. Also, the edges are sealed perfectly to prevent even a single drop of water or any dust away.
With ruggedness, it also carries a large battery which makes it bulky and cumbersome, but we can ignore the fact because that is all a rugged is all about. The device also sports few hardware buttons for features which are also made out of metal. On the left, we see volume rocker and the SOS button and on the right is the power button below that are the dedicated FTT and Camera button (you might get confused with the FTT button as the power button).
At the front, above the screen, there is a LED notification light along with sensors (G-sensor, P-Sensor, L-sensor, Gyro, Electronic Compass, barometric sensor) and an 8MP front facing the camera. Below that is a fast fingerprint sensor for recognizing your fingerprints to unlock the device and a microphone at the edge. On the back side, it has an NFC sensor below the 16MP primary camera with dual-tone LED flash and SIM, and memory card tray kept safe from dust and water with the help of the two metal screws (this is where the screwdriver comes handy).
Note: Placing the power button below the FTT button would have been handier.

The Ulefone Armor 2 rocks a 5-inch Full-HD IPS touchscreen display. It produces a sharp display with maximum resolution of 1080x1980p at 441ppi of picture density and 24-bit of color depth. Also, there is zero distortion at different viewing angles. Despite being the 1080p display, this is not the best display I have seen on the phone
(we are not complaining).
The display of the phone is a bit dull and readable on a bright sunny day reaching 389cd/m2 at the top brightness. Going out in bright sunlight can make it little difficult to read. Although, it produces crisp text and color making it adequate for daily use.
Performance & Hardware
This is the section which sets this phone apart from other phones of its segment. Commonly, a rugged phone is thought as durable and long lasting phone but after knowing the specs sheets of this device might change your thinking. These are some things which make this device powerful yet rugged with no compromisation. It ranks high in performance with the long lasting battery plus the unmatchable durability.
Now, talking about what is inside the phone: The Ulefone Armor 2 runs on a MediaTek Helio P25 (MT6757T) which is famously known for its fast processing. As we are aware the internal architecture comes from MediaTek’s 2.6 GHz 64-bit octa-core processor. Also, an enormous 6GB of LPDDR3 RAM plus 64 GB of onboard storage makes it a perfect performer. The 64-bit ARM Cortex-A53 processor is divided into two parts: one with 2.6GHz and another with 1.6GHz of clock speed. This partition helps in better app management and faster UI. The UI is quite snappy and opens an app quickly and switching between app is responsive.
To enhance the graphics, it boasts a 1GB of ARM Mali-T889 MP2 GPU. Also, the 64GB of storage can be extended with the help of a microSD card slot for upto 256GB placed at the back of phone along the SIM card slots.
Today, everybody wants to seize the moment on their camera with keeping that in mind Ulefone has also used a 16MP f/2.0 primary camera setup with dual LED flash. As the rugged phones are used by explorers and adventurers. Moreover, these people love taking pictures of the place they travel and the beautiful natural landscapes around them. The camera is featured with Autofocus, HDR, Face Detection, Live Photo, and more. It also has different modes in the camera app like Video, Pro Mode, and Panorama mode. The camera also has a digital zoom upto 3x to capture far objects or scenes.
The secondary camera is an 8MP f/2.0 camera sensor for great selfies and only has live photo features with 3x of digital zoom.
Both the cameras take decent shots. The front facing camera is good for selfies, but the primary camera lacks some bit of dynamic range due to which the exposure is always on the higher side.
We have mentioned this for many times, that a long battery backup is everybody’s need these days. The Ulefone Armor 2 is powered with a long-lasting 4700 mAh massive Li-Po Battery. The battery here is non-removable as usual and can easily stretch for a couple of days with simple use of browsing, music, and camera.
The battery is charged with a USB Type-C port to get you going. It also supports quick charging by MediaTek Pump Express plus 2.0 with 9V, 2A power brick. The battery is claimed to give a standby for 640 hours.
As told earlier this phone is made to stand apart from other rugged phones. So, to keep that even better Armor 2 is running on Android-based OS out of the box. It runs on the latest Android Nougat (v7.0) with standard Android UI. The user interface is super fluid and efficient, thanks to the stock Android.
The on-screen software buttons can be pulled down by pressing the arrow button and can be used anytime by just swiping up from down. The fingerprint sensor is also used as a back button (not a home button).
The UI also has few customisable gestures with some features like System Motions gestures, off-screen gestures, Screen Recording, Eyebrow mode, One hand mode and position of navigation buttons can also be toggled between the ‘back’ and ‘recent’ buttons according to your preference.
The Ulefone Armor 2 comes with USB Type-C to give fast charging, and fast data exchange rates and the most importantly gives you the freedom to plug in the charger from any side as it is reversible.
The Ulefone Armor also comes with general features like Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP, OTA sync, Computer sync, tethering, and more. It also has a support of GPS, A-GPS, and GLONASS for better navigation and accurate directions. The phone also supports 27 network bands of 6 types with advanced 4G LTE covering all the key carriers in Asia, Europe, and America.
PTT: It is a walkie-talkie feature like software for the real-time conversations with teammates on a Zelio named 3rd party application. It can be activated anytime by pressing the dedicated PTT button just below the power button easily on the right side.
Camera: Clicking photos comes real handy with this dedicated camera button to just point and shoot. Just click it once to start the camera and shoot your favorite pictures placed at the bottom right side.
SOS: We never know when we fall into an emergency or accident. For getting in touch with your friends or family is made super easy while in an emergency. Just hold the button for 5 seconds to make emergency calls or send a message with your current location to already designated contacts.
The phone also comes with some handy toolkit with a comprehensive set of tools which can come in use whether you are traveling or wants to know some scientific measurements of your current location.
The list includes Sound Maker, Compass, Flashlight, Bubble Level, Pic Hanging (to help you hang the scenery straight on the wall), Heart Rate (placed around the primary camera), Height Measure (from sea level), Magnifier, Alarm, Plumb Bob, Pedometer, Protractor, Pressure (this is where barometer comes in use).
