Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Review
Selfie Camera Phone
Xiaomi with its new 'Y' series has come with its first selfie-phone, especially made for selfie-addicts with a 16MP front shooter with a LED-selfie light. With this step, Xiaomi is ready to beat its competitors in every way, it will exciting to see how the other companies come up with. It will be available for sale on Amazon India, MI Indian site and also in the offline market at MI stores.
As we know, Xiaomi has come up with its first phone under selfie centric series 'Y'. With MIUI 9 out of the box it comes with a 16MP selfie camera with a LED flash. The phone is powered with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 chipset with a 5.5-inch HD Display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. You can choose between its two variants of 3GB RAM and 4GB RAM with support of 32GB and 64GB of on-board storage respectively which can expanded using dedicated memory card slot for upto 128GB. It also comes with a decent battery capacity of 3080 mAh to give stand-by time for a day and all common features a phone has. We see very less use of metal on this phone and we are not complaining as it indeed is a phone a phone with good feel and hold to our hands.
We tested it for few days and results were:
Design test review
Xiaomi has come up with a new series but looks quite familiar. This phone has a look of Xiaomi's earlier phones and also is a global version of Redmi Note 5A and Redmi Note 5A Prime released in China this September. Here I see Xiaomi is compromising with the designs of its phones! Not impressed.
Performance test review
Redmi Y1 is a good performer with Snapdragon 435 chipset clocked at 1.4 GHz with 8-cores and Adreno 505 GPU under the hood. The app launching was smooth and had a few percent of lag while playing games. But as always, a lot has to be worked on its OS by Xiaomi which makes its phone a little laggy after some hours of heavy use.
Camera test review
A lot more has to be improved with the picture quality of the front camera even in daylight. In low-light, the pictures had a lot of noise. Talking about the rear 13MP camera, it performed decently and did a little better with HDR mode but surely is not a low-light camera. While in daylight you can click some decent photos but you will have to compromise with the noise.
Xiaomi Redmi Y1 is undoubtedly a decent performer and is definitely not a phone for heavy users or multi-tasking. But yes if you are a selfie addict and doesn't play much of games with normal use of phone, this is the phone for you. Xiaomi has always impressed us with the pricing of feature rich phones without compromising with the hardware. Kudos to Xiaomi for that. The Redmi Y1 comes with a value for money price of Rs 8,999 for 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM and Rs 10,990 for 4GB RAM + 64GB variant.
